Pure tumescent liposuction and liposculpture Q&A

Pure Tumescent liposuction surgery is suitable for those who wish to improve a specific area, the most popular being arms, thighs, breasts/chest, double-chins and love handles. Liposuction treatment should not be considered as a weight loss technique. If this is your goal, we can put you on a weight loss programme. Pure Tumescent liposuction surgery can also be used for male breast reduction, female breast reduction and breast enlargement by fat transfer.  Men having tumescent liposuction make up around 10 per cent of our patients. They range in age but most are below the age of 50. Liposuction for Gynaecomastia, commonly known as man boobs or moobs, is increasingly popular.

Cellite Clinic are experts in Pure Tumescent Liposuction in Cardiff and the UK. Cost of liposuction is higher in hospitals. We offer an affordable liposuction treatment in Cardiff that can be considerably less expensive than a hospital or clinic. We are one of the very few clinics that offer this liposuction treatment performed by Dr Harryono Judodihardjo, one of the most experienced cosmetic surgeons in the UK. We have an excellent track record and hundreds of very happy patients, and offer personalised care throughout.

Liposuction pricing starts at £3500, but the exact costs can only be confirmed after a thorough consultation with the surgeon. By using our office surgical suite, which is fully registered and regulated by the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, we are able to offer liposuction in our Cardiff clinic and hence allowing us to charge a considerably lower price for the liposuction surgery.

Tiny incisions are made and a thin tube called a microcannula is inserted under the skin, penetrating the fat between the skin and muscle. The areas of fat to be treated are injected with a large volume of tumescent liquid before liposuction is performed. This solution numbs the area and shrinks capillaries to minimises blood loss. The liquid also causes the compartments of fat to become swollen and firm, allowing the cannula to travel smoothly beneath the skin. The cannula is then pushed and pulled through the fat layer to break up the fat cells which are drawn out by a vacuum. An elastic compression garment is then worn to help the skin contract and heal.

A local anaesthetic and adrenaline solution to prevent bleeding is injected into the tissues to totally numb the area of treatment. This will mean an almost painless fat removal treatment, as well as reduced bleeding. For patients who require relief from fear or anxiety, mild sedation can be given.

Most patients will see some results straight away. However, the appearance of the treated areas will continue to improve in the months after the procedure. Depending on the area treated it can take up to 12 months for the final results to become evident. Once the fat has been removed it is gone for good, and if you follow a healthy diet and exercise plan it will not come back.

This will depend on the number and size of areas to be treated, but generally between 1 and 3 hours. However patients will be expected to spend up to 6 hours in the clinic on the day of the surgery.

Patients wear a comfortable compression girdle for about 1-3 weeks and can usually return to light activities and work 2-3 days after the surgery.

Frequently asked questions about non-surgical or non-invasive liposuction

  • Pure Tumescent liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be done safely and less expensively in the office surgical suite
  • The risks of general anaesthesia are eliminated with tumescent liposuction
  • Blood loss during surgery can be greatly reduced with tumescent liposuction
  • Blood transfusions and intravenous fluid replacement are usually not necessary with tumescent liposuction
  • Sensations felt during the suctioning portion of tumescent liposuction are usually minimal. Patients rarely have any discomfort during the surgery
  • Post-operative recovery is faster following pure tumescent liposuction as opposed to traditional/standard liposuction
  • Post-operative discomfort is typically minimal. Significant numbing usually lasts for 18 hours in the suctioned areas
  • Patients usually dress without assistance following pure tumescent liposuction and may walk out without assistance. In comparison, patients are customarily very bruised, very sore, and may be incapacitated for weeks following standard liposuction under general anaesthesia
  • Post-operative pain medicines are rarely needed with pure tumescent liposuction
  • There is usually much less bruising and swelling with pure tumescent liposuction

Tumescent Liposuction is designed to solve contour problems and not lead to actual weight loss. The volume of fat is large compared to its weight and thus the amount of weight change, is relatively small despite major changes in the contours.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction requires only local anaesthesia. The tumescent solution that is injected to firm up the tissues is made up of a weak solution of Lidocaine anaesthetic and a weak Adrenaline solution. This combination will totally numb the area of treatment as well as reducing bleeding. It will result in almost painless fat removal. For patients who require relief from fear or anxiety, mild sedation can be provided.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction, and liposuction in general, are not designed for massive fat removal or weight loss. The best candidates are men or women who are well-toned and near ideal body weight but have resistant fat pockets or problems with the fat re-distribution associated with pregnancies. Pure Tumescent Liposuction can also be used to sculpt certain problem areas, such as the hips, arms, stomach and chin.

As with all liposuction surgery, it is important to avoid drugs that promote bleeding, including Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and any arthritis pain medication for one week before surgery. Vitamin E should be stopped for at least 3-4 weeks, since it interferes with Vitamin K function to produce clotting factors in the liver. A shower is important the morning of surgery. Shave the surgical areas if it is hairy. You should arrive for liposuction surgery with not too full a stomach, but may take important morning medications with water. Smoking and alcohol disrupts wound healing, blood clotting and causes increased pain post-operatively. Therefore, patients should stop smoking for several weeks and drinking alcohol for two days before liposuction surgery.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction has limited blood loss, post-op bruising, swelling, and pain. Many patients who have had Pure Tumescent Liposuction report markedly lower post-surgery discomfort, and much more rapid return to normal lifestyle compared to classical liposuction patients. You must limit your activity for at least a day after liposuction surgery, and should drink extra liquids. Be careful to eat light food at first, if sedation has been used, to avoid stomach upset. Some drainage of ‘tumescent fluid’ from the access stab incisions is completely normal in the first 18 hours, and ends by the following day. In some cases drainage continues slightly longer and the use of any simple dressings like the feminine pads to catch drainage is an effective way to deal with this minor inconvenience. Patient should shower on the second day after the operation. The compression garment should be washed and dried before putting it on again. Gentle exercise like walking and stretching should be done daily but heavy exercise should be avoided until the second week after the operation.

Patients wear a comfortable compression girdle for up to 2-3 weeks and can return to light activities and work 2-3 days after the surgery. However, aerobic or heavier exercises should be avoided for about 2 -3 weeks after the operation to prevent persistence of swelling.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction is not intended as a primary weight loss technique, although it is a successful adjunct to weight loss in individuals who are nearing their ideal body weight via sensible diet and exercise. It is best to carry out Pure Tumescent Liposuction when you are closer to your target weight, since at higher weights, areas of predictable excess can be identified, but there is no way to predict how much of the excess is genetically determined and persistent, versus how much is due to simple excess weight, and thus reversible.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction can be used in patients who are significantly overweight, but it can only remove fat which is outside of the abdominal cavity, and can only be safely used to improve the shape of an overweight patient at their present weight, We do not consider Pure Tumescent Liposuction, or any Liposuction technique to be a safe alternative or substitute for disciplined weight loss.

Tumescent liposuction is not designed to address the skin deformity known popularly as cellulite. Cellulite should be treated with Endermologie which can be combined and performed six weeks after the liposuction surgery.

Pure Tumescent Liposuction surgery is entirely safe if it is carried out by a competent trained doctor. Pure Tumescent Liposuction surgery is a procedure which is based mainly on artistic skill, but must be tempered by the ability of the doctor to understand and manage cardiovascular aspects of the fluid load imposed by the injection of large volumes of Tumescent Solution. Some rare risks of Tumescent Liposuction include: bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, injury to nerves or blood vessels, persistent blood or serum accumulation and contour irregularities.
