Cryolipolysis is a treatment for the reduction of fat. It is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment that uses freezing to damage the fat cells.

Cryolipolysis can reduce fat in areas that are resistant to dieting and exercise. The fat cells in these areas have different receptors that prevent them from releasing their fatty content when the person exercise or diet. The locations of these fat cells are different from family to family. Their locations are determined by the genetics of the family. For example some family have a trait of fat deposits in upper arms or inner thighs or abdomen, etc.

Cryolipolysis can of course also reduce fat in other places but if you are fat or obese, then it is always best to diet and exercise first.

After a consultation with our doctor and if you are suitable, you can book in for the treatment. It is a non-surgical and reasonably comfortable treatment.

First your photographs will be taken and your height and weight will be measured. A protective cloth will then be placed over the area to be treated and the treatment head is then placed on top of the cloth. The machine will be switched on and the area to be treated will then be sucked into the treatment head and chilled. Within a few seconds the treated area would have reached the required freezing temperature. The treatment will be completed in about 60 minutes.

After the treatment the skin in the treated area will be frozen. The therapist will then heat up the treated area gently by rubbing it with her hands for a few minutes. The treatment is completed once the area had thawed.

After the treatment, the treated area will usually be bruised. Just like normal bruises from other causes this bruising will last for about 7 to 10 days. It will be tender to touch but not too uncomfortable.

Rare complications:

  1. Freeze-burn can happen to the treated skin. This can be a serious complication as it can lead to permanent scarring.
  2. Pain in treated site: This can occur two weeks after the treatment. However this usually resolves spontaneously without any treatment after several weeks.
  3. Paradoxical adipocyte hyperplasia. Several cases have been reported where the treated area became larger about six months after the Cryolipolysis treatment. What causes this side effect is unknown. If this happens it can be treated with liposuction.

Most patients can see some results by 6 weeks after the treatment. However the best results can be seen about 12 weeks after the treatment. Clinical study had shown that 73% of treated patients are happy with their results.

This will depend on how much fat need to be reduced. With each treatment up to 25% of the remaining fat can be reduced. Most patients with only a small amount of fat will only require one or two treatments but there are patients who require 4 or even more treatments. Repeat treatments can be done once every 6 weeks.

The fat cells that had been killed by cryolipolysis treatment will be removed permanently by the body’s own immune system. However, the remaining fat cells can enlarge and replace the volume that had been lost if the person put on weight.

The ideal patients are those with Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 to 28 with fatty areas that just would not go with dieting and exercise. Those with BMI over 28 can still be treated but more treatment sessions may be needed. The best areas to be treated are abdomen, back and flanks.
