A local anesthetic is first injected to various points in the skin to numb the area. A specially-formulated liquid is then applied to the skin, liquefying the top layers and causing a slight tingling and burning sensation. The face is then covered in tape and the patient is sent home. The following day the tape is removed. An antiseptic powder is applied. This reacts with the fluid content of the skin to harden into a protective mask. The patient returns home and remains there for eight days to allow the new skin to grow. They have to stay still, eat soft foods, sit and sleep with the head raised.
A pure petroleum jelly is applied to the rigid mask in order to keep it soft and to allow it to flake off naturally from the skin. Results can be seen immediately when the mask is flaked off. The new skin looks renewed and glowing and slightly flushed and sensitive, like light sunburn. This lasts for a week. During this time, wearing a blended version of green foundation with normal foundation can help camouflage the pink tones in the new skin colour. The lifting, firming and thickening of the skin continues over the next few months, as the collagen is rebuilt.
As the peel is very deep, Exoderm would not usually need to be repeated for a number of years.
